Historical Photographs Collection

The Chinese Community History Room houses a rare collection of historical photographs. Many of these photographs depicts the life of early Chinese-Canadian immigrants in Vancouver's Chinatown. Some of these photographs date back to the nineteenth century, when Chinese people began arriving in Canada. Below are an example of what is included in our historical photographs collection. Members of the Hon Moon Chinese Athletic Club are doing the lion dance on Pender Street. This lion dance is leading the Benefit Parade held by the Vancouver Overseas Chinese War Refugees in 1938. Chinese refugees who came to Canada during this period were victims of the Sino-Japanese war just prior to the outbreak of World War II. Photograph #5196

In 1985, the Chinese Community History Room commisioned a photographer to photograph all the buildings in Vancouver Chinatown for historical reasons. In addition, the Chinese Community History Room also displays more than thirty photos by Chinese-Canadian artist Jim Wong-Chu who has successfully captured the millieu and culture of the Vancouver Chinatown.
