The books housed in the Chinese Community History Room provide much information about the past generations of Chinese Canadians. Our collection includes Paul Yee's "Saltwater City" and other titles which describe the life of past generations of Chinese Canadians. The collection also contains books used by early Chinese Canadian immigrants - a page from one of these artifacts is shown below. |

This is a page from a English-Chinese phrase book published in 1926. These books were typically in use by immigrant Chinese who came to Canada and wished to learn English for business purposes - no formal English classes for immigrants were available during the early part of the 20th century. The Chinese Community History Room holds a complete set of Chinatown Today (an English magazine on the Chinese community in Vancouver). We also house other published materials such as annual association reports, personal scrapbooks, posters, calendars and pamphlets. |
