CHOO DJ Bill Johnson and Lill Bolton at the December '09 CHOO Reunion Lunch

LILL BOLTON WRITES...

(One of the much-beloved names that come up again and again when you delve into CHOO history is that of Lill Bolton - who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to help make CHOO a very special place...)

Hi John,

Lill Bolton here. I have just spent over a hour going through your website. What a walk down memory lane. You have done a wonderful job. I have a shoe box full of photos dated from around the early 80's and after reading the CHOO site I had to go thru them again. I left my photos with John Nugent and he is going to scan them and forward them onto you.

Greg was correct. I did stay with the radio station when "The Four Elles" purchased it. A lot of changes have been made. The biggest being when we bought the two Oshawa stations and moved to Oshawa. We moved twice during my radio career and what a job that was. I retired May of 08 and John Nugent, Steve Kassay and myself were the only CHOO people left.

I think I started part time in 1977. I filled in on the front desk for 6 weeks, then covered the Traffic Dept (doing logs not on air) for 2 weeks then helped Lorna Braid in accounting. When she became Station Manager a year later I took over the accounting duties. I was there doing accounting and traffic when we were sold in 1994 and became KX96 FM in November 1994. We bought the Oshawa FM and AM in 2003 and moved to Oshawa. During this time I became part of the management team and was given the opportunity to become a very little share holder. Retired in May of 08. This is 31 years in the capsule version - a lot of years and I enjoyed them all.

Every once in awhile they would ask me to voice a commercial (they had to be hard up for a new voice) and I would be a nervous wreck doing it. Certainly respected you on air guys. You do not know how much it means to me to be remembered and in a positive way. I am so glad Jay Mandell found the site. What a great guy, I must confess, one of my favourites. Saw him last January at [the January 2009 CHOO] get-together. Judy Bull has now moved to Oshawa where I live and we have been in touch. She also has been in touch with Gord Taschuk. Judy is the one who passed your site onto me.

I have seen so many changes in the business. It is so interesting hearing about everyone and what they are doing now. I agree that there was always "family like" ties between the staff and I guess that is why we are all enjoying this site so much. It is like hearing about long lost relatives. I did have a CHOO reunion at our cottage around 6 years ago but of course so many were missed. I would not want to guess how many people I worked with over the years.

Anyway, keep up the good work and I will certainly check the site periodically.

Looking forward to your next revision. Lill

Thank you Lill, for your great letter and good thoughts. It was terrific to hear from you and to see you at the reunion too of course. Lill has arranged with John Nugent to scan her old CHOO photos (many thanks, John) and I will post them here on the site later this year.

A NOTE FROM GORD TASCHUK

John,

Wow! Great job compiling some of the history of good old CHOO Radio. I finally got a chance to go through the site and boy did it stir up some memories. I'll have to look through my old photos to see what I can find. I know I do have a couple of old mic flashes kicking around. (Photos added to Gary's Facebook collection.) Unfortunately, I won't be able to make this year's alumni lunch, but will be there in spirit.

Gord Taschuk

Good to hear from you Gord! We all look forward to reading more about your recollections of your time at CHOO. Maybe one day I'll even write about the day you got CHOO back on the air when we went off the air during a lightning storm...
