  1. The Executive of the BCPOA have completed a Strategic Plan
  2. Membership has declined in the BCPOA since Youth and Adult Probation Officers were separated into two ministries in 1997.

 

S.W.O.C. Analysis:

Stengths:

  1. Conference venue: The RCMP Pacific Region Training Centre: a sub campus of the Justice Institute at the former CFB Chilliwack. State of the art, inexpensive facility.
  2. Improved Communication via the BCPOA Website & newsletter
  3. Involvement of key Persons involved in policy making at a federal level:

Weaknesses:

  1. Low membership
  2. Organizational boundaries (Regionalization:) PO's don't network as effectively as they used to. High cost of travel

Opportunities:

  1. Professional development in the area of Mentoring, YCJA, & Internet crime
  2. Partnership with education

Challenges:

  1. Apathy of professionals
  2. Career development barriers for youth PO's (i.e. B.S.W)
  3. Job Security & Governance

 

Strategic Planning Initiative:

  1. Focus on planning a high calibre CONFERENCE: March 25-27, 2004
  2. De-emphasize the Annual General Meeting aspect
  3. Encourage attendance & Participation by Ministers at BCPOA Conference:
  4. Ask Management for more support: Half Day travel AND a full day of educational Leave for ProD.
  5. Seek support from Private, non-profit agencies concerned with crime: ICBC, K-12 Schools, Telus, Shaw, Rogers, Policing of Cyberspace, Banks, Computer Call Centres, Child Exploitation and other Crime Prevention agencies.
  6. Partner with Educational Institutions involved in Criminology: SFU, JIBC, Royal Roads, UCFV.

Involve our other partners involved with law enforcement: Judiciary, Crown Police, Corrections Canada, Private Contractors, Aboriginals, CAPs.
