The GPI Pacific Society was incorporated in 2002 at its Annual General Meeting held in Prince George, B.C. Members of the Society have since participated in workshops, research projects, and other related activities. A small Board of Directors has worked to maintain the Society, focusing on the development of a strategic plan. Our network includes 200+ individuals and organizations from government, non-profit, academic, and other sectors.

Background on the October 2004 event:

In 2003, GPI-Pacific applied for and received funds from the "Partners for Organizational Development" program. These funds were used to plan, organize and hold an event that would help the GPI-Pacific board of Directors in its strategic planning efforts. The event was titled:

"IMPLEMENTING THE GENUINE PROGRESS INDEX IN BRITISH COLUMBIA"

The invitation was crafted to draw the attendance and future involvement of people with sectoral and/or organizational influence, who see the need for the Genuine Progress concept and its practice in BC, and who can assist in its launch and further development.

35 people attended. Open Space process was used to build a meeting agenda, to organize small group discussion, and to hold focused conversations on possible elements of our first strategic plan.

The following priority topics emerged from the event for the GPI to respond to in its strategic plan:

  • What is GPI? How is it Different? What is its Process?
  • Participation (Generally) & Inclusion of Marginalized (Specific) Governance/ Funding/ Implementation
  • Network of Resources
  • Communication and "Sexy" Media Strategies
  • Data and Methodology
  • First Movers: People and Projects
  • Olympics as Key Element of our Strategic Context
  • Limits to Growth: Time and Natural Resources
  • Criticisms of GPI we will hear from Opponents

Details of the event, including sub-issues, and action suggested for each of these emergent themes are available in the full workshop report.
