What Can We Poor Females Do?
St. Mark's-Trinity Church - Saturday, November 22, 2003 at 8 pm
"Like the padding that one inserts in cases of china, [women] are valued at nothing, and
[yet] everything breaks without them."
- Suzanne Necker, 1777
From courtesan to princess to nun, and almost everything in between, this programme, featuring
Calgary soprano Julie Harris, celebrates the musical legacy of talented, spirited and perspicacious women. Taking
Henry Purcell's song of the same name as its starting point, The Burney Ensemble sets out to prove just what 'poor
females' can do!
Musicians:
Julie Harris - soprano
Sonja Boon - baroque flute
Paul Luchkow - baroque violin
Nan Mackie - viola da gamba
Valerie Weeks - harpsichord
Readings will be drawn from the correspondence of Suzanne Necker, Madame d'Epinay, and Olympe de
Gouges' celebrated 'Declaration of the Rights of Woman and the Female Citizen,' written in 1791. Also included
will be readings from contemporaneous treatises on women's etiquette.
