The Amorous Flute
St. Mark's-Trinity Church - Saturday, September 27, 2003 at 8 pm
"One must, by all means, observe not to make grimaces or to have ridiculous posture. The
flute, being a noble instrument, is to be played in an agreeable manner."
- Michel Corrette, 1734
Recorder players Liz Hamel and Norah Rendell join the ensemble in a sensuous programme of works
for flauti dolce e traversi. In 1740, Hubert le Blanc contrasted the flute's supple, round 'masculine' sound with
the recorder's tender, sonorous 'feminine' qualities. The marriage of the two creates an intoxicating blend of
colour, timbre and texture.
Musicians:
Sonja Boon - baroque flute
Liz Hamel - recorder
Norah Rendell - recorder
Nan Mackie - viola da gamba
Valerie Weeks - harpsichord
Readings will be drawn from the flute and recorder treatises of Hotteterre, Freillon-Poncein and
Quantz, as well as from etiquette masters of the early eighteenth century.
