30 years of Prison Justice Day: Radio Documentary
A documentary about the history of Prison Justice Day, featuring the stories and memories of prisoners and activists. August 10th is Prison Justice Day. It is a day to honour the memory of the men and women who have died unnatural deaths inside Canadian prisons. On this day, prisoners across the country fast, refuse to work, and remain in their cells, while supporters organize community events to draw attention to the conditions inside of prisons. This documentary is dedicated to all those who have died behind bars.

A two-year research report by the John Howard Society of Toronto and the Centre for Urban and Community Studies at the University of Toronto provides new insight into the relationship between incarceration and homelessness in Toronto. One of its central findings is that a staggering 800 adults - and likely as many as 1,000 - are released from Ontario's correctional facilities and courts each year onto the streets of Toronto, with little or no discharge planning and no place to live.

Kim Pate on the CSC Response to the Human Rights Commission Investigation into Discrimination Against Women in Prison in Canada
In January 2004, the Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) released a report entitled, Protecting Their Rights, that details discrimination that women face inside Canadian prisons based on sex, race and disability. They made a number of recommendations to the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) for changes in the way that they incarcerate women prisoners. In February 2005, the CSC released its response to these recommendations. Stark Raven radio interviewed Kim Pate on this issue. The interview gives an overview of the CSC response, as well as analysis of the implications. Kim Pate is the executive director of the Canadian Assoication of Elizabeth Fry Societies. Elizabeth Fry was part one of the groups to file the initial complaint to the Human rights commission 4 years ago.

We become our own wolves
During the summer of 2007, Jessica MacCormack, while on a residency with Modern Fuel Artist Run Centre/ The Artel, worked on an art project with the women in The Isabel MacNeil House (the only low security federal prison for women). For three weeks she met with the women three times a week to paint and draw with them with the intention to eventually create an animation with their artworks (no cameras are allowed in the facility). The final project was put to the music of “We become our own wolves” by Rae Spoon. Upon completion, there was a screening for the women and each received a copy of the DVD.
