Before I became vegetarian, I used to go to old fashioned butchershops, much preferable to supermarkets. However there was a disturbing, distinctly 19th century feeling about them, which in turned conjured up various things for me: Victorian repression, aggression, mercantilism, imperialism...you name it, they had it. Another feature of these butchershops are the de rigeur framed photos of local sports teams.
So...here I tried to blend as many things together as possible...repression of women as performed by classicizing Victorian sportsman: classical image of woman with Victory cup, extracting her own milk, leaning against shop window in which is displayed 1880's style costume on which rests rather brutal image of cricket bat. Against the sepia background are individual feathers (Winged Victory) and at bottom, laurel wreath (Victory again). Car reflected in window to remind us of persistance of these attitudes to present.
There! I didn't think I could remember it all.
My most refined, finished painting.
