Third Annual General Meeting Concludes

The third Annual General Meeting of Nepal Cultural Society of BC (NCSBC) was held on April 13, 2002 at Bahai Centre in Vancouver.  The meeting had an attendance of 91 members. This was the first ever AGM that did not have election of new Board of Directors on the agenda. The 2nd AGM had fixed the term of NCSBC directors at 2 years.

The meeting started with straw poll on language of deliberations. By show of hands, the members voted to deliberate in Nepali language during this and future AGMs. After the agenda was adopted, the meeting deliberated on various items on the agenda and made important decisions.

Among the resolutions proposed and adopted were, a) spelling out the number of votes to two per family membership, and restricting the eligibility to only one member of the family to be nominated for election to the Board of directors, b) limiting the term of the directors to a maximum of two consecutive two year terms, c) authorizing the Board of Directors to make changes in NCSBC by-laws to enable it to carry out charitable activities and other activities related to members’ interest. The BOD has subsequently decided to add “to undertake activities of charity and welfare benefiting members of Nepali community or Canadian citizens at large” as one of the purposes of the society. The BOD also decided to add clause 65 to its by-laws as follows “Within the purview of the BC Society Act, the Board of Directors is entrusted to exercise its own judgment and discretion in matters not explicitly stated in the bylaws. However, any such action has to be approved by 2/3rd majority of the Board of the Directors.”

The AGM also appointed Deb Adhikari as new Secretary of the society to replace Suresh Bhatta who resigned due to personal reasons.

The AGM also nominated members to the various committees. They are Social and Festival Celebration, Cultural and Performing Art, Sports Youth and Children Committee, Education, Organization and Communication Committees.

Earlier, the minutes of second AGM was passed unanimously. Following this, the President Parashar Malla and the Treasurer Ganga Malla read their reports to the members. The reports were subsequently adopted by the members.

Other items discussed during the AGM included hosting of first Pacific North West Nepali Community Picnic on September 01, 2002, participation in multicultural parade and increasing participation in Nepali language classes. The members were informed that Nepalis from Seattle, WA and Portland, OR USA were expected to attend the event. The members endorsed the idea of participation in multicultural parade and suggested that the Nepal Heritage and Language Centre (NHLC) try holding classes in locations other than Vancouver to encourage greater participation.

The AGM adjourned at about 5:45 PM following announcements on subjects of members’ interest.

President’s Corner

Nepali community in BC is getting larger by day and this brings with challenge of maintaining the contacts with each other, so, group gatherings becomes very important to his end.

It was a busy summer for NCSBC with its involvement in different events including summer picnic, multicultural parade and the much-awaited Pacific North West Nepali Community picnic. Enthusiastic participation of the members of our community made these events possible. NCSBC is hosting the first ever picnic involving Nepali community outside of BC. I would like to thank all the members for their support and involvement in this important endeavour. Please join me in welcoming the guests from Seattle and Portland area.

This summer also gave us an opportunity to pride in academic achievement of one of our own. Himesh Rauniyar graduated with top honours from his high school.

Hope all of you had a great summer.

New Year 2059 Celebrated

The beginning of the New Year Bikram Sambat 2059 was observed on April 13, 2002 following the conclusion of 3rd AGM earlier in the day.  The celebrations took place in Bahai Centre in Vancouver. A large number of Nepali community members and friends of Nepal were in attendance.

A different  approach to food management was taken for the occasion by catering food. The choice of food was Chinese delicacies.

The event provided for an opportunity to the attendees to network and mingle with each other. A short cultural performance was also featured during the celebrations. Among the performers were Malina Malla, Birendra Maharjan, Subhadra Adhikari, Sajana Shrestha, Radha Baral and Meenu Dahal.

The President also introduced the recent Nepali arrivals in BC to the members during the occasion.

Nepali Language Class in Surrey

Nepal Heritage and Language Centre (NHLC) conducted Nepali Language Classes in Surrey for the first time. In fact, the last two classes were held in Surrey. The first one was held on August 3rd in Surrey Public Library in Whalley and the 2nd was held on August 17 in Bear Creek Park. The class of August 17th had to be relocated to park as we were unable to use the booked library space due to construction work in the library. Attendance of children on both the days was very encouraging. We sincerely hope that the participation will continue. Please contact Ramesh Sthapit for more information on classes.

We request you to pay your membership dues for 2002 if you have not yet done so.

Summer Picnic Observed/ Book Club Initiated

This year’s summer picnic was observed at Central Park in Burnaby on June 30, 2002. The potluck picnic was attended by about 130 people and they enjoyed a variety of delicious food.  The summer picnic is one of the several annual events organized by NCSBC.  The day was just right weather-wise though there was some concern for rain earlier in the day.

A group of Nepalis have started a book club in Greater Vancouver Region. The club has already held two of its meetings. The first club meeting discussed “Atmabritanta.” by B. P. Koirala and the book chosen for the second was “Family Matters’ by R. Mistry. Please contact N Koirala if you are interest in the club.

NCSBC would like to extend condolences to Harkaman Gurung and his family on sad demise of Harkaman Gurung’s father .

NCSBC Participates in Multicultural Parade

NCSBC participated in multicultural parade organized by Trinidad and Tobago Cultural Society on July 27, 2002 in North Vancouver. This was 2nd time in a row that NCSBC participated in the event. About 35 members of Nepali community joined the parade that started from Victoria Park at about 10:30 AM. The weather was just right with light clouds over-head during the parade. Various community groups representing different countries were represented in the parade. Colourful and diverse attire added glow to the parade. The participants as well as the audience who had lined up along side the streets of North Vancouver appeared to have immensely enjoyed the festivity. Dance and music played by different groups kept the audience entertained throughout the duration of the parade. Nepali contingent was led by children holding NCSBC banner. The participants wore different ethnic costumes and the lady participants were uniquely decorated with flowers, while the men’s heads were adorned with Nepali caps. Ethnic ornaments worn by children added glitter to the Nepali contingent. It gave a nostalgic feeling when some audience greeted our group with folded hands and the words “Namaste”. The parade turned into an assembly at Water Front Park upon completion of the parade. At Waterfront park, the crowd was entertained by performers of community groups representing different countries. The park was also the venue for vendors selling various merchandizes and food. Special arrangements were made for the children to engage in craft-work. All the participating groups including NCSBC were awarded certificates of participation. Overall, the Nepali participants enjoyed the event very much though the hope was to improve over last year’s participation in terms of number as well as the presentation of materials during the parade.
