SF Canada "was founded in 1989 as Canada’s National Association for Speculative Fiction Professionals, and was Incorporated as SF Canada in 1992.
"SF Canada exists to foster a sense of community among Canadian writers of speculative fiction, to improve communication, to foster the growth of quality writing, to lobby on behalf of Canadian writers, and to encourage the translation of Canadian speculative fiction. SF Canada supports positive social action.
"'Speculative fiction' is understood by members to include science fiction, fantasy, horror and any other weird fiction that invokes a sense of wonder.
"SF Canada aims to provide a structure for socializing and maintaining links among members throughout Canada, from coast to coast to coast, in both official languages, and to promote the publishing and sale of works created, edited, and published by its members." The Greater Vancouver chapter (https://hwagv.com) welcomes all current HWA members in British Columbia, publishes a blog and facilitates readings, workshops, interviews, resource-sharing, and networking opportunities.
The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association (SFWA) is an association of professional writers, which exists
"1. To promote the writing and appreciation of science fiction, fantasy and related genres and field;
2. To inform, support, promote, defend, and advocate for writers of science fiction, fantasy and related genres;
3. To be a comprehensive source for information, education, support and fellowship for authors of science fiction, fantasy and related genres in the stream of commerce;
4. To promote and defend the interests of writers in said genres within the various aspects of the publishing industry;
5. To engage in any lawful act or activity arising from or related to the foregoing purposes."
Among other activities, SFWA maintains a writers’ information centre and the well-known Writers Beware program. SFWA hosts the Nebula Awards at an annual conference, and administers grants to organizations and individual writers facing legal expenses. For more information, see https://www.sfwa.org
