Fanzines, according to the definition I learned from fannish fandom, are voluntary publications produced by amateurs, usually SF fans, for other SF fans. Their format, frequency and content are entirely open to the individual. Part of the fannish definition was that they were only nominally for sale; usually they were distributed freely, despite mounting copy and postal costs, and traded for other fanzines, or written and pictorial contributions.
Before the Internet arose, hardcopy fanzines were produced by a variety of means, ranging from carbon copies and hectographs or spirit duplication, letterpress or mimeography, to simple photocopying.
Fanzines, according to a definition that emerged in mediafandoms, were amateur fictionzines offered for sale, by and to mediafans.
Zines, according to the punk and DIY subcultures that appeared in the 1990s, were voluntary publications produced by amateurs, often featuring poetry and punk/music criticism, often offered for sale in music and book stores.
After the emergence of the Internet and the World Wide Web, fanzines started appearing as .TXT, .DOC or .PDF documents, and were traded by email or posted on websites. Quickly some online archives emerged, such as eFanzines.com and fanac.org.
To some extent fanzines has been displaced by blogs, vlogs, podcasts, and social networks, if they are the new modes of self-expression and discourse of ideas.
Clearly a fanzine is what you make it.
What are the fanzines that SF fans produce now? That changes, of course, from decade to decade, even from year to year. Faneditors are also prone to changing titles and content, as well as changes of address. Here is my best compilation of currently-available fanzines, based on my own correspondence and on online sources.
