1) Speaker Series - As part of our mandate to educate, we host an ongoing series of talks on various food and agriculture topics. Past topics include buying organic and local foods; growing your own veggies (even if you don't know how or don't have the space); phytochemicals/nutraceuticals.
2) Foodlink hotline - We are partnering with Information Services Vancouver and the Greater Vancouver Food Bank to start a foodlink hotline to link people with the nearest source of free/low cost food as well as food programs/organizations. We are currently looking for people to sit on a working group to look at funding sources.
3) Single room occupany hotels and the d/t eastside - We are working with DERA, Community kitchens and other groups to look at the lack of cooking facilities in d/t hotels and what can be done about it.
4) Community Food Security Indicators Project
- A 2-3 year research project to look at food security in the Lower Mainland.
The goal is to identify what our food issues are, what indicators can we use
to measure how well we are dealing with those issues and most importantly, what
can we do about it. Research team members include Alejandro Rojas, Faculty member
UBC Dept of Agricultural Sciences; Herb Barbolet, Executive Director of FarmFolk/CityFolk;
Gwen Chapman, Association Professor of Food, Nutrition and Health at UBC; Wendy
Holm, Economist and Agrologist; Graham Riches, Director of the UBC School of
Social Work and Family Studies; and Deanna Tan, Dietitian/Nutritionist and Coordinator
of the VFPO.
