What to expect
At your first meeting please come 10 minutes early, so you can get adjusted to the room and speak with the contact person you had e-mail exchange or the phone conversation with.
You will be supplied with a name tag so people know how to adress you without you having to introduce yourself. The first thing we do is either listening to a relaxation tape or doing a relaxation exercise. Following the exercise, we have a weekly check-in, where members let other members know how their last week had been, if they had any anxiety or stress. The second half of the meeting is an opportunity for people to practice feared situations in a safe environment. |
People who want to actively engage in overcoming their fears usually prepare some kind of activity, like reading a text to the group members or being interviewed by them. Your participation is completely voluntary-if you don't feel like saying anything, just pass it on to the next person. There is no pressure to perform in our group and this is why it works.
Group members who would like to employ additional means to overcome their anxiety can be supplied with references to books and therapy programs we know exist.
