First Notice of September 23, 2015 Seminar
"Integrating the Disciplines on Engineering-Architectural-Construction Projects"

The 75th PM Professional Day will be held on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at the Executive Suites Hotel, Burnaby. Register now with Joan Hambury, PMP at [email protected] . Do not reply to this email; instead, send a new message to Joan Hambury.

Our agenda for the day will include these presentations and workshops:

  • UBC DISTRICT ENERGY SYSTEM – Paul Holt, CEng, MIET, CEM, and Martin Nielsen, Architect AIBC, MRAIC, PEng. UBC has committed to Green House Gas reduction targets of 33% by 2015 and 67 % by 2020 from a 2007 baseline. To achieve these aggressive targets, UBC has undertaken two landmark and industry-leading projects. This presentation will show how both projects include innovative technologies and construction techniques, and are based on positive financial business cases while also addressing significant deferred maintenance costs.

  • FAILURE TO IMPLEMENT – Joan Hambury PMP. Why is it that so many of us attend workshops led by the most renowned and inspirational leaders, come away filled with enthusiasm and purpose – only to shove the material we collected into a drawer and never take it out again. This session will explore the reasons why many leaders and senior executives "fail to implement" at almost all levels within their organizations some of the best and most proven methodologies to achieve success.

  • HOW WE SURVIVED A GAMING STUDIO TI (TENANT IMPROVEMENT) PROJECT – Helsa Nothof, PMP. As project managers, we're exposed to many types of business cultures and individuals with each client. While projects are classified into high level categories such as Software Development, I.T. Infrastructure, Tenant Improvements, etc., more often than not, a project can turn out to be very different from what was expected from how the project was categorized. This session will take you through one such project.  .

  • OWNER-DESIGNER-BUILDER PARTNERSHIPS – Bryan McConachy, PEng, PMP. After a refresher on traditional contracting strategies, we will address the rise of collaborative project delivery strategy options, including Collaborative Design/build, Integrated Project Delivery and Alliancing, and will review a number of new publications by others working on CPD.

  • CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT - WHY, WHEN AND HOW? - Prashant Pandit, MEng, PEng, PMP. Success on a construction project is highly dependent upon the project delivery method. This presentation will define and discuss commonly used construction contract methods and focus on the application of Construction Management as the project delivery method when circumstances warrant.

  • COMMUNICATIONS: ATTITUDE AND STRATEGY – Matti Saar, PMP. The technology of communicating is quickly changing and, with it, preferences, habits and attitudes. This is having an effect on the quality of our communication for the projects we work on. Learn how to assist in identifying effective strategies, techniques, guides and solutions to some of the current difficulties in this workshop.
For more information on the technical program and presenters, contact the Project Manager for the 75th Professional Development Seminar, Linda Flegel, PMP at [email protected]

PDU Claims for Full Day

Seminar participants can claim seven PDUs for the day. In addition to the time they spend as participants, Presenters and Workshop Leaders can claim a PDU for each hour spent performing those roles, including preparation time

This is a full-day seminar. If you register it is understood that you plan to attend for the entire day. If you leave early it is a discourtesy to your fellow professionals. Another PMP from the wait-list has been denied the opportunity to attend, and the presenters at the end of the day are slighted.

Registration Policy - Fine Print

As an incentive - and reward - for service, the November 25, 2009 General Meeting of the Society approved a priority system which gives preferential access to seminar registration. Presenters, workshop leaders, management team volunteers, and retired officers will be given first priority for available seats for a period of time following their service. The remaining seats will be assigned through a lottery as has been done in the past.

The list of individuals eligible for first priority seating, along with the rules for assigning available seats, can be downloaded at http://www.vcn.bc.ca/pmprof/A-List.PDF

For the September 23, 2015 seminar, once seats have been assigned to the presenters, the management team for the day, and the priority applicants, a lottery shall be used to determine which of the remaining applications for registration are chosen for acceptance, in accordance with the rules set out below.

Registration for a seminar does not open until a registration notice, such as this one, is broadcast. There is no provision for advance registration. Only those applications received after the time of broadcast will be considered.

Each application received by the Registration Manager prior to midnight Midnight September 9, 2015 will be assigned to either an A-list pool or a regular pool. Each application will be given a random priority number within the pool. Available seats will first be awarded to those in the A-list pool in priority sequence. The remaining available seats will be awarded to those in the regular pool in priority sequence. Once the registration limit is reached, the remaining applications will be placed on a wait list in priority sequence, first A-list then regular. Each application received after midnight September 9, 2015 will be assigned the next sequential regular priority number in the order it is received, whether or not the applicant is on the A-list.

Each application will be acknowledged and each acceptance will be confirmed by email.

Each application received will be considered a firm offer to register and to pay the full fee. Cancellations will be accepted up to midnight, Wednesday September 16, 2015. Those on the waitlist will be accepted in priority order if spaces become available prior to the cancellation deadline. A waitlist candidate will be notified of acceptance by email. A waitlist candidate must cancel to be removed from the list.

The Society will issue an email notice of acceptance to the address provided in the registration application, but is not responsible for ensuring that any registrant has received the notification of acceptance.

Any registrant who does not show is expected to pay the full seminar fee. Accepted registrants who fail to pay the full seminar fee will be prohibited from applying for registration at future events until the payment is received.

Payment by cheque is preferred. Cash is accepted; please try to bring exact change. There is an ATM in the hotel lobby. No credit cards or Interac (debit cards) are accepted.
