First Notice of February 18, 2015 Seminar
"Tried and True - or New Approaches - for IS/IT Projects"

The 72nd PM Professional Day will be held on Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at the Executive Suites Hotel, Burnaby. Register now with Duncan Smith, PMP at [email protected] . Do not reply to this email; instead, send a new message to Duncan Smith.

Our agenda for the day will include these presentations and workshops:

  • ROADMAP TO PROJECTS TO PROGRAMS TO REALITY - Stuart Bourhill, PMP - A program manager's journey from evaluating the current state of the Student Information System (SIS), through to the phased revamping of core SIS functionality. The story of a successful program outcome with a summary of recent decisions and lessons learned.

  • TRADITIONAL VS WATERFALL - A Case Study - Peter Duggan, PMP - A large software development project in which two teams with different backgrounds and experiences were allowed to choose which lifecycle they would follow waterfall or agile. The objective performance of the teams is described, as well as the differences in how the project was perceived by the project stakeholders: management and the end user.

  • ERP Implementation Case History - Inderjeet Sahota, PMP - "ERP Implementation/Upgrade Project" using project management methodology.

  • COTS, Why are They Not? Rob Shulz, PMP Participants will work in small groups to review and analyse one of six scenarios describing a particular phase of a software implementation involving a COTS software. Drawing upon participants' experience and knowledge of commercial software system implementations, participants will decide whether a customization is warranted or not for their scenario.

  • HOW NOT TO RUN PROJECTS - EXPERIENCE FROM THE TRENCHES - Kim Hunter, PMP In this workshop, the participants will bring their unsuccessful experiences in project management on a variety of topics into the environment of the seminar. Small teams will select the best learning experience from these stories and prepare a presentation for the larger group on lessons that could be learned.

  • INFORMATION SECURITY - A PRIMER FOR PROJECT MANAGERS - Moe Kia, PMP - This workshop will introduce some key concepts in Information Security. Participants will be encouraged to apply their new found knowledge in interactive scenarios involving the delivery of security requirements in IT projects.

PDU Claims for Full Day

Seminar participants can claim seven PDUs for the day. In addition to the time they spend as participants, Presenters and Workshop Leaders can claim a PDU for each hour spent performing those roles, including preparation time

This is a full-day seminar. If you register it is understood that you plan to attend for the entire day. If you leave early it is a discourtesy to your fellow professionals. Another PMP from the wait-list has been denied the opportunity to attend, and the presenters at the end of the day are slighted.

Registration Policy - Fine Print

As an incentive - and reward - for service, the November 25, 2009 General Meeting of the Society approved a priority system which gives preferential access to seminar registration. Presenters, workshop leaders, management team volunteers, and retired officers will be given first priority for available seats for a period of time following their service. The remaining seats will be assigned through a lottery as has been done in the past.

The list of individuals eligible for first priority seating, along with the rules for assigning available seats, can be downloaded at http://www.vcn.bc.ca/pmprof/A-List.PDF

For the February 18, 2015 seminar, once seats have been assigned to the presenters, the management team for the day, and the priority applicants, a lottery shall be used to determine which of the remaining applications for registration are chosen for acceptance, in accordance with the rules set out below.

Registration for a seminar does not open until a registration notice, such as this one, is broadcast. There is no provision for advance registration. Only those applications received after the time of broadcast will be considered.

Each application received by the Registration Manager prior to midnight Midnight February 4, 2015 will be assigned to either an A-list pool or a regular pool. Each application will be given a random priority number within the pool. Available seats will first be awarded to those in the A-list pool in priority sequence. The remaining available seats will be awarded to those in the regular pool in priority sequence. Once the registration limit is reached, the remaining applications will be placed on a wait list in priority sequence, first A-list then regular. Each application received after midnight February 4, 2015 will be assigned the next sequential regular priority number in the order it is received, whether or not the applicant is on the A-list.

Each application will be acknowledged and each acceptance will be confirmed by email.

Each application received will be considered a firm offer to register and to pay the full fee. Cancellations will be accepted up to midnight, Wednesday Febraury 11, 2014. Those on the waitlist will be accepted in priority order if spaces become available prior to the cancellation deadline. A waitlist candidate will be notified of acceptance by email. A waitlist candidate must cancel to be removed from the list.

The Society will issue an email notice of acceptance to the address provided in the registration application, but is not responsible for ensuring that any registrant has received the notification of acceptance.

Any registrant who does not show is expected to pay the full seminar fee. Accepted registrants who fail to pay the full seminar fee will be prohibited from applying for registration at future events until the payment is received.

Payment by cheque is preferred. Cash is accepted; please try to bring exact change. There is an ATM in the hotel lobby. No credit cards or Interac (debit cards) are accepted.
