First Notice of February 19, 2014 Seminar
"Managing IS and IT Projects – How Far Have We Come?"

The 68th PM Professional Day will be held on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at the Holiday Inn Express, Metrotown, Burnaby. Register now with Tracey Lakey, PMP at [email protected] . Do not reply to this email; instead, send a new message to Tracey Lakey.

Our agenda for the day will include these presentations and workshops:

  • BUSINESS IMPACT ANALYSIS; A PRE-REQUISITE FOR A BUSINESS CONTINUITY PLAN – Marko Wolf-Pany, P.Eng.,PMP – Business Impact Analysis (BIA, a.k.a. Business Impact Assessment) supports Business Continuity Planning (BCP) by attempting to decide which processes are the most critical to recover in case of a disaster. The BIA Workshop will provide hands-on experience in completing a Business Impact Analysis matrix.

  • ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGE MANAGEMENT: VALIDATED THEORIES AND PROVEN STRATEGIES – - Bill Warner, Ph.D., PMP, CQM/OE, CSSGB - This presentation prepares the participant to be an effective change agent in a constantly changing and transitioning organization. Based on proven models and strategies, you will learn a practical roadmap for successful and sustainable change.

  • SINK OR SWIM – TOP 5 NON IT CHALLENGES EVERY IT PROJECT NEEDS TO KNOW FOR SUCCESSFUL PROJECT DELIVERY - Andrew Kim, PMP & Stanley Tang, PMP – The presenters will share their perspectives on the top 5 non IT challenges that can potentially derail the successful delivery of an I.T. Project with some personal war stories and mitigations they have used from their lessons learned.

  • IMPLEMENTING A PM METHODOLOGY, USING 4PM AS AN EXAMPLE – Kim Hunter, PMP - How does one implement a methodology? What IS a methodology? This workshop will suggest a few options and guidelines and some exercises in defining requirements. The methodology used as an example was developed by Dick Billows – see www.4PM.com, has at its core a unique method for defining desired outcomes, and is one of the simplest I have implemented.

  • IT SOLUTIONS FOR STUDENT SUCCESS IN HIGHER EDUCATION – Jim Tucker, P.E., PMP & Elinor Carlton, BA, MA – The University of British Columbia's integrated approach to student success includes the creation of the University-wide Online Advising Management System (OAMS). Developing OAMS, and delivering it to a decentralized community of student service professionals, required sensitivity to those groups' autonomy and business needs, the participation of business representatives on the IT project team, effective stakeholder management, and alignment with University objectives.

  • THE PAST, PRESENT AND POSSIBLE FUTURE OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT – Rav Gill, MSc, PMP - The art of project management has changed over the last decade with client requirements growing and ever more demanding. This seminar discusses our journey since the start of the millennium and how through a new methodology we can drive out our future.

PDU Claims for Full Day

Seminar participants can claim seven PDUs for the day. In addition to the time they spend as participants, Presenters and Workshop Leaders can claim a PDU for each hour spent performing those roles, including preparation time

This is a full-day seminar. If you register it is understood that you plan to attend for the entire day. If you leave early it is a discourtesy to your fellow professionals. Another PMP from the wait-list has been denied the opportunity to attend, and the presenters at the end of the day are slighted.

Registration Policy - Fine Print

As an incentive - and reward - for service, the November 25, 2009 General Meeting of the Society approved a priority system which gives preferential access to seminar registration. Presenters, workshop leaders, management team volunteers, and retired officers will be given first priority for available seats for a period of time following their service. The remaining seats will be assigned through a lottery as has been done in the past.

The list of individuals eligible for first priority seating, along with the rules for assigning available seats, can be downloaded at http://www.vcn.bc.ca/pmprof/A-List.PDF

For the February 19, 2014 seminar, once seats have been assigned to the presenters, the management team for the day, and the priority applicants, a lottery shall be used to determine which of the remaining applications for registration are chosen for acceptance, in accordance with the rules set out below.

Registration for a seminar does not open until a registration notice, such as this one, is broadcast. There is no provision for advance registration. Only those applications received after the time of broadcast will be considered.

Each application received by the Registration Manager prior to midnight Midnight February 5, 2014 will be assigned to either an A-list pool or a regular pool. Each application will be given a random priority number within the pool. Available seats will first be awarded to those in the A-list pool in priority sequence. The remaining available seats will be awarded to those in the regular pool in priority sequence. Once the registration limit is reached, the remaining applications will be placed on a wait list in priority sequence, first A-list then regular. Each application received after midnight February 5, 2014 will be assigned the next sequential regular priority number in the order it is received, whether or not the applicant is on the A-list.

Each application will be acknowledged and each acceptance will be confirmed by email.

Each application received will be considered a firm offer to register and to pay the full fee. Cancellations will be accepted up to midnight, Wednesday February 12, 2014. Those on the waitlist will be accepted in priority order if spaces become available prior to the cancellation deadline. A waitlist candidate will be notified of acceptance by email. A waitlist candidate must cancel to be removed from the list.

The Society will issue an email notice of acceptance to the address provided in the registration application, but is not responsible for ensuring that any registrant has received the notification of acceptance.

Any registrant who does not show is expected to pay the full seminar fee. Accepted registrants who fail to pay the full seminar fee will be prohibited from applying for registration at future events until the payment is received.

Payment by cheque is preferred. Cash is accepted; please try to bring exact change. There is an ATM in the hotel lobby. No credit cards or Interac (debit cards) are accepted.
