Program for the Day
The Question and the Issue
-
What are the key responsibilities of the manager of a project that provide the
greatest benefit to the public good, clients, employers, team members, and
other stakeholders?
-
What part does professionalism play in performing the role?
The need for this examination of our role is underlined by:
-
A large variability in the duties and responsibilities assumed by PMs, among
client and employer organizations, and in the views of practitioners themselves
-
A record of unfulfilled expectations on all sides, many failed projects, and a
troubling lack of clarity about standards of professional duty.
-
Our apparent failures of inaction on projects gone wrong whether they be
ineffective large scale IS systems costing hundreds of millions or
organizational change initiatives which yield nothing but resistance.
The Event
Project managers are coming together for a full day of interactive discussion,
first to explore the critical features of our work and then to come to a shared understanding.
We aim to more clearly define our roles and then to agree on initiatives which will enable us
to better fulfil the responsibilities which emerge from our discussions.
An Un-conference Format using Open Space Technology
Based on reflections on the over-arching question, you the participants will
create the detailed agenda by generating the sub-topics for dialogue in groups
made up of those who care about the same issues. The outcome of each
small-group discussion may be as simple as sharing an understanding of an
issue, or may be as transformative as making commitments to initiate change.
The day will conclude with a reflection on the most critical responsibilities
that we have identified, and an opportunity to organize follow-up actions in
collaboration with those who share your aspirations, and your passion,
for what matters most in the practice of project management.
