DMPPP Celebrates its 50th Year : Sock drive kicks off host of events commemorating 50 years of education

Vancouver, B.C.: Dunbar Memorial Parent Participation Preschool (DMPPP), the educational play date for 2-, 3- and 4-year-olds, turns 50 this school year and the parent-participation preschool is planning a wealth of family-friendly events to celebrate this milestone in preschool education.

Throughout its 50 years, DMPPP has provided thousands of preschoolers with the proven, essential play-based learning environment to help them reach important social, emotional, and cognitive developmental milestones, to become resilient and to manage stress. Its community-centric philosophy has also provided wellness and an undeniable sense of community for its DMPPP families. At the same time, the DMPPP children and families have given an inordinate amount of joy, laughter, wonder and teaching back to the preschool and its educators.

Recognizing these gifts, DMPPP has chosen to celebrate its birthday by giving back to the community that has so richly rewarded it throughout its 50 years in the Dunbar neighborhood. A host of events are being planned, including charity events, parent-education speaker series, story time with childrens' authors, a celebratory concert and so much more.

To start off the year, DMPPP is supporting the Vancouver Health Contact Centre, which provides basic health care, drug and alcohol education and basic life skills training to individuals living in the city's downtown eastside, through a "sock drive." The first of many charity drives the preschool will be initiating, DMPPP families will be providing new men and women socks to the Centre for its visitors who can receive free foot soaks as part of healthcare services but who often don't have any clean socks to put on their clean feet. DMPPP has set up a large bin in the classroom to collect socks and also encourages other families to contribute to the cause - thanks to the kind support of Kokopellis a bin is also available at the cafe.

The goal is to collect as many pairs of adult-size socks as possible in advance of the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, when the Centre estimates a few hundred people will come in for support.

If you would like to be a part of DMPPP's caring, learning family, the preschool still has a few 3s spots available for the 2007-2008 year. Learn more at: http://www.dunbarmemorialpreschool.ca

About Dunbar Memorial Preschool

Dunbar Memorial Preschool (DMP) is a parent participation preschool that has been celebrating play as the cornerstone of children’s early learning for nearly 50 years. At DMP play is paramount because play is an essential part of a child's life: a child grows, learns, communicates, acts and reacts through play. Our carefully crafted, multi-faceted programs emphasize this philosophy, enabling children to explore their first school setting freely and safely in a highly social, engaging and collaborative environment. Backed by a superb location in the Dunbar Community Centre, an unrivalled classroom setting and a stellar teaching staff, DMP is the educational play date for 2-, 3- and 4-year-olds.
