The evolution of information society has been a swift technoligical explosion shrouded with invisible adversities. As it become easier and easier to share information seemlessly with one another a certain self awareness began to emmerge. That initial cause - to share information - was the entire purpose of the original creation of the internet. As we all know the first network, as a researvh project, was to enable professionals to more easily interact with one another. As soon as we began to share ideas, opinions and data we began thinking together as one whole.

The text based internet did not have a whole lot to offer. But you could plug in, become a node, select your ip address that you wanted to use and were then free to check out whatever resources that you wanted, internet relay chat, send email or snoop around. The biggest problem was it was difficult to find the information you needed and the continuity was questionable. There was many disputes over other people using someone else's acclaimed ip address. Then came tools like gopher that enhanced information searches and the hosts system that helped keep records straight about who's ip was who's.

Soon there was telnet and bulitin board systems, the open directory project [dmoz] and Usenet < uh...dirty talk>. The net was becomming cluttered with stuff.Everyone wanted to share information. Noone really ever expected the rate of growth that took place. And little was understood about the impact on society it would ultimately have. Except those of us in the know, hackers, we could see what was happening. I remember once I had the entire internet memorized in my head. I had been everywhere and in every system. That did not last long, but I could clearly see where all this technology was taking us. It allowed us to see what we are - as humans - what we think, believe and hope for - good or bad.

Then came the world wide web, graphical windows, netscape browser and gmail. And the whole thing morphed into the one hundred percent visual of the text net. With all the same as we saw in the text world - resources, communication, entertainment, the reflection of humanity - but in a grand scale. That's when greed took root. The power of the internet was seen as a means for profit. And then came the dot com era.and the stock market went crazy. The attention of political powers and politicians ensued as they realized that the internet could replace government. So government decided not to share information. Instead became fearful that the information network would reveal too much about private government agendas and wanted a fortress of secrecy.

To destroy the natural evolution of the internet it would take a lot of fear - enough to get citizens to allow censorship and filtering. Thus began the process of spinning hackers into criminals and the illusion that the internet is unsafe. From that point began the information wars. They manufactured false information like identity theaft, internet child stalkers, credit card frauds online and such, by beefing up the few crimes that have occured and connected hackers to them. All to sway public opinion about the saftety and security of the internet. Electronic voting methods were targeted and made to appear unreliable even though the technology exists to ensure security.

Hackers - the elite - became upset about this and started to really test security and provided free disclosures pertaining to any flaws discovered in the hopes that citizens would see that the net is and can be made even more secure so that self government could be realized. And the government and media continue the scare campaign to encourage government control of the internet. Authorities are afraid of us in the know because we can and have walked right into their secret information.

Today - the arrival of the Stuxnet Worm - has completed the entire spectrum of the human psyche. War. In a profit driven civilization, if you cannot obtain what you want via the application of profiteering, the next process is taking it by force. Even though no real damage occured, it was a definite proof that it was possible to attack another country and cause physical damage. This then in turn elevated the hacker from some annoying geek to someone who is a possible cyber terrorist.

There is government legislation on the floor to once and for all censor, filter, block and control the internet and some countries in the world are already doing this - even placing back doors to listen. The US is trying to pass legislation that gives them the power to listen in on citizens surfing habits, reward you with access to the internet, cell phone, credit card, etc if you are in compliance. And deny citizens access to cell phones, internet, credit card, ect if you are not in compliance. Being witness to this evolution has dashed many of my dreams of a just and unprejudice society free from suffering and pain. Where human rights, the well being of the environment and wildlife are placed above the greed lust for power and money

But there is still hope. Hackers find ways to subvert the filters, proxies, backdoors, scanners, etc used to control citizens. Remember that these tools were written by programmers and so you see where I am going with this. As I look around me here in Canada, there is a lot of unemployment and economic suffering. People are not happy with their government and that is good. The fatal flaw of greed is greed. On the internet I have noticed that citizens are becomming self aware about the poor economics that governments have created and are asking questions. Good. Ask more questions, maybe you will hit on the right question...
