The health care system in Canada is rapidly eroding thanks to extensive privatization under neoliberal governments.  For instance, in 2002 the BC Liberals introduced the Health and Social Services Delivery Improvement Act, or Bill 29, which eliminated the right to collective bargaining for health workers and allowed many health care services to be privatized.   As a result, over thirty hospitals in the lower mainland and southern Vancouver Island privatized housekeeping services between October 2003 and July 2004, and approximately 8500 workers were laid off, most of whom were working class women and women of colour. Bill 29 still has impacts on privatization in BC.

Delisting of necessary health care services also goes hand-in-hand with privatization.  In BC, services such as physiotherapy, eye exams and some prescription drugs have been delisted under MSP and are no longer insured by the government, shifting the health costs onto the individual, which means that poor and working class people will face limitations to using these services.

Privatization of health services combined with low wages in BC have had profound impacts on the quality of life for working class people and health workers.

The Alliance for People’s Health is currently gathering testimonials to document the effects of privatization on people’s lives and would like to hear your story about privatization has violated your right to health.
