I am very concerned about the
continuing humanitarian crisis in Darfur, Sudan.
I am therefore grateful for the
commitment you have made to go to Sudan, and for the response to this
emergency that Canada has shown to date. But civilians are still at
risk. The government of Sudan has failed to meet its international
obligations. Clearly, the international community must do more.
Continued diplomatic engagement is
essential, until the Sudanese government fulfills its commitments
referred to in Security Council Resolutions 1564 and 1556.
Holding political leaders accountable
as individuals can also be an effective measure. In your meetings with
Sudanese leaders and in your public pronouncements, I hope that you
will also make clear the determination of the Canadian government to
see that persons found to have been involved in the commission of war
crimes and other criminal acts will be prosecuted.
