Prime Minister Martin’s Visit to Address the Humanitarian Crisis in Sudan

What to Do

1.  Familiarize yourself with the background information  on Sudan.

2.   Compose your letter.

Thank the Prime Minister for travelling to Sudan and demonstrating Canada’s concern and diplomatic engagement at the highest level of government.

Note that though the Sudanese government has primary responsibility for prosecuting persons accused of ethnic cleansing, it has demonstrated an unwillingness or inability to control the militias, maintain law and order, or protect civilians.

Call for continued diplomatic engagement until the Sudanese government fulfills its commitments referred to in Security Council Resolutions 1564 and 1556.

Also make Canada's position clear that persons responsible for violations of international humanitarian law –war crimes, crimes against humanity and perhaps genocide - should be held accountable by being brought before a competent international tribunal, either the International Criminal Court or a special “ad hoc” tribunal.
