VOLUNTEER JOB DESCRIPTION
VCN HelpPage and FAQ Writers
Objective: �� � �� Work with VCN User Support volunteers and staff to update, organize and maintain VCN Help Pages and FAQ's, within migration and development toward virtual website
Training/Support to be provided by:� Help Desk Co-ordination Assistant and Technical Co-ordinator
Duties:
Essential Qualifications:
- based on experience, consultation with other VCN volunteers, and research on other help resources, choose an area of expertise and:
- test, update and correct content on existing HelpPages
- compile additional HelpPages based on Frequently Asked Questions and Answers from RT
- edit existing FAQ's and add recent additions
- research help sources for area of expertise, test for ease of use, and add relevant links to Help and FAQ pages
- communicate findings and status of work with other volunteers via off-vol mailing list, RT and other VCN Volunteer collaboration tools as developed and recommended
- document time and activities in Activities Records
- expertise in installing, configuring, troubleshooting and documenting findings on Internet connectivity in:
- Windows 3.1
- Windows 95/98
- Windows 2000
- Mac
- Linux
- various terminal programs, including telix, commnet, putty, hyperterminal
- expertise in installing, configuring, troubleshooting and documenting findings on browser and email programs, including:
- Netscape Communicator (Navigator and Messenger)
- Internet Explorer
- Outlook and Outlook Express
- Opera
- Pine
- Lynx
- various web-mail gateways
- ability and enthusiasm to share expertise through strong interpersonal, oral and written communications skills
- advanced knowledge of basic HTML and FTP
- attention to detail and accuracy
- a committment to univeral access to public information
- access to the Internet from home
- thorough knowledge of VCN services and Help Desk procedures
- thorough knowledge of barriers faced by individuals and non-profit organizations
- ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken English; additional languages an asset
Time Commitment Required:
- four hours per week for at least 3 months on-site during regualr office hours in User Support and documentation
- additional time to attend orientation, training and meetings and research online information
Location: VCN office, 411 Dunsmuir Street and online following period of orientation
