Vancouver CommunityNet Board Meeting September 15, 1998 Present: Penny Goldsmith, Larry Kuehn, Darlene McBain, Greg Sturk, Sujay Nazareth, Lyle Gardiner, Richard Songhurst. Staff: Peter Royce, Jason Currell Visitors: Paul Hunt, James McGuire, Allison Curtis 1. Agenda. M/S/C That the agenda be adopted. 2. Minutes. M/S/C That the May 19, 1998, minutes be approved. 3. Staff reports. A) Peter Royce reported on projects and staffing. What's-new Web page has much of this information at http://www.vcn.bc.ca/whats-new . B) Jason Currell reported on progress on installation of new digital lines and other upgrades. He outlined some resource implications of offering PPP service. C) Summer students. Alex Vasudevan made improvements to the help pages, including access to community resources and email to government at all levels. Angela Krewenchuck got information out to libraries and interviewed library staff about use. 4. Finances. Year-end statements are under preparation. A budget forcast for the next year will be presented to the October board meeting and annual meeting. M/S/C That Carolyn Nantais be hired for 10 hours per week. 5. Annual General Meeting. Penny and Peter have been doing an initial search for new board members. Greg Sturk will join the search committee. Sujay and Darlene will serve on the AGM organizing committee. It was agreed that volunteer appreciation certificates would be given to volunteers at the AGM. The AGM will be held on November 3, 1998, at 7 p.m., following a board meeting at 6 p.m. 6. New initiatives. M/S/C That VCN should move to offer PPP service; that it should be offered to all users, not as an extra, pay-for service; and that it be phased-in with service to community groups first. M/S/C That the VCN offer domain names and listservs as a value-added service to community groups. 7. Vancouver Public Library. M/S/C That the VCN send a letter to city council opposing cuts to the Vancouver Public Library budget. M/S/C That the VCN publicize the concerns about the VPL budget cuts as broadly as possible. 8. The meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m. The next board meeting will be held on October 20 at 6:30 at 411 Dunsmuir.
