VANCOUVER BIDS TO HOST THE WORLD AT THE GLISA NORTH AMERICA CONTINENTAL OUTGAMES
This could be British Columbia’s largest hosted GLBT event to date.
A meeting has been set for December 14 at 5:00 pm at the Sheraton Wall Centre to discuss the formation of a bid committee to have Vancouver host the 2011 GLISA (the Gay and Lesbian International Sport Association) North America Continental Outgames and Human Rights Conference.
The GLISA North America Continental Outgames brings together the gay, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community (GLBT) in a massive celebration of sports, culture and human rights.
The Steering Committee for the bid, including Team Vancouver, Tourism Vancouver and others, is urging Vancouver to show its support and help the bid initiative succeed, “To host this type of event requires corporate, small business, sport, political, community and individual partnerships,” states Vancouver Pride Society President and Steering Committee Member John Boychuk. He continues, “This could be the largest GLBT event that has been hosted in British Columbia.”
In a phone interview from Ottawa Senator Larry Campbell said, “It would be a natural host city as Vancouver continues to be recognized as the #1 leisure travel destination in Canada.” Senator Campbell the former Vancouver Mayor has been a large supporter of the GLBT community.
The North American Outgames held earlier this year in Calgary were a huge success and the VPS hopes that by 2011 Vancouver can blow them out of the water, “It would be a fantastic way to keep up Vancouver’s momentum post-Olympics and we urge the community to get on board,” says bid-steering committee Chair Greg Larocque.
The five Founding Directors of GLISA North America will be launching a concept that we hope will bring several thousand GLBT participants to the GLISA North America Continental Outgames. All those interested in supporting the Vancouver bid can attend a discussion at 5 pm on Friday December 14th at the Sheraton Wall Centre.

FGG 2007 AGM brings new leadership, capping a year of record growth
The Federation of Gay Games general assembly elected a new female co-president and seven new board members on 27 October at its annual meeting in San Francisco, capping a year of record growth in organizations associated with the Federation.
This year’s annual meeting was the first for the new general assembly following the Federation’s November 2006 restructuring in Lyon, France. The 2007 meeting concluded just days before the 1000-day countdown to Gay Games VIII in Cologne, Germany, which runs from 31 July through 7 August 2010.
Emy Ritt was elected the Federation’s new female co-president after Kathleen Webster announced her retirement. Webster served in the position since 2001. Sion O’Connor continues as the male co-president. Each co-president is elected in alternating years. Ritt will also continue to hold the vice president of host relations position, permissible under board rules.
Regarding Webster’s service, Ritt said, “For more than 10 years Kathleen Webster sacrificed her personal life to further the work of the Federation. During some of the Federation’s most challenging periods, Kathleen led us with integrity and dedication. Maintaining the ‘high road’ at all times, Kathleen supported and encouraged the recent restructuring of the Federation board to the new assembly organization”.
Among the seven new board members are residents of Sydney and Paris. They joined another six re-elected to this year’s thirteen open positions. Both assembly and board members vote in board elections.
Among those re-elected was Paul Oostenbrug, vice president of membership. Oostenbrug worked diligently this year promoting the benefits of serving on the assembly. “I am incredibly heartened by the membership's jump from 23 to 38 organizations in the last six months”, Oostenbrug said. “This would not have happened without the work of dedicated champions on the membership committee and the Federation’s regional representatives around the world. I think the Federation's future is very, very bright”.
The annual meeting included a variety of workshops facilitating productive working relationships among the assembly’s international members. A meeting highlight was the enthusiastically received presentation by the 2010 host organizers from Cologne.

Team Vancouver Social Night
Hey Teams, Leagues and individual athletes!! Team Vancouver has an opportunity to host a recurring social night!! We'd like to hear from you about ideas for mixing things up a bit and having a fun night once or twice a month that would allow our sport community to socialize in a casual and fun environment. A fun night out to meet people from sports other than your own. Perhaps there could be unique challenge matches made to show just how great you are!! While having fun is the focus, we'd also be able to provide mutual benefit for Team Vancouver's fundraising efforts and yours. Contact Eric Hoppe via sport@teamvancouver.net
