Tomas in the Northeast; San Pablo and San Antonio in the East; Padre Garcia, Rosario in the Southeast; Ibaan and San Jose in the Southwest; Cuenca and Mataas na kahoy in the West; Balete and Malvar in the Northwest.

History of Lipa City

The eldest settlement of the Lipeños was in a place called Tagbakin somewhere in the south eastern region of Bombon Lake now known as Taal lake. It was in Tagbakin that the Augustinian missionaries led by Hernandez de Cabrera first saw the piponyon in 1605. Lipeños together with other settlers of this lake region repulsed the Spanish explorers under the leadership of Salcedo in 1574. Students of Philippines past believed that the settlement at Tagbakin was established by a Bornean chief Datu Puti in the beginning of the tenth century A.D.

From 1605 to 1702, Lipa was only a missionary site used by the Augustinians, as a center for the propagation of Catholicism. The water of lake of Bombon rose due to the eruption of Taal Volcano and the site was moved repeatedly until people reached the present site of Lumang Lipa, now a barangay of Mataas-na-Kahoy which was formerly a part of Lipa. The volcano erupted again and the settlement was moved again this time to the present site of Balete, formerly a barrio of Lipa. When the volcano erupted in 1754, Balete was destroyed. The people traveled up to the highland and settled in the present site of the City of Lipa, in 1756 with Tomas Hernandez as the gobernadorcillo. It was in 1756 when the church and town were first built. Nicolas Bravo was the gobernadorcillo then, in 1763, the church was burned by the British soldiers who came to Lipa in pursuit of the Spanish treasure brought to the Philippines from Mexico by the Spanish galleon, Filipino.

Famine occurred in Lipa in 1805 and many Lipeños were compelled to eat amorceco. In 1808, Galo de Leon Reyes began the wide spread cultivation of coffee, but in 1852 Lipa was wrecked by an earthquake. It was burned partially in 1868. In 1887 Lipa was made Villa de Lipa by Queen Cristina of Spain and it was raised to a Diocesan See, which include the province of Batangas, Laguna, Tayabas, Marinduque and Mindoro with Msgr. Jose Peytrelli as the first bishop in 1910.

On August 31,1974 Lipa was made a chartered city by virtue of a bill presented by Assemblyman Jose B. Laurel to the Legislative. It was Republic act No.162 which was approved in June 20,1974. On August 15,1972, Lipa was elevated into an Archidiocese composed of Batangas province and the Dioceses of Lucena, Infanta and Calapan with Msgr. Alejandro Olalia as the first Archbishop.

Lipa City has a land area 247,659,269.57 square meters and is 1,025 feet above sea level.
