Welcome to Stoney
Creek |
This
year’s Great Salmon Send-off was the 20th anniversary of the
first GSSO, which was celebrated beside the Brunette in 1990 and moved to
Stoney Creek the following year. Our thanks go to Lawrence Ryan, our liaison
with the Stoney Creek Community School, for his excellent display of
photographs and newspaper articles covering the 20-year period. This year’s
event was held on Saturday, 8th May. The fish release went off
with no problems, and attendance was at least as high as last year. Our theme for 2010 was "Water for Life". All life, whether human beings, farm animals, wildlife, or vegetation, needs water to survive, but the world's water supply is under siege. Many formerly fertile parts of the world are becoming deserts. The Polar ice-caps are melting, as are many glaciers all over the world, leading to low-lying islands being submerged, and increased spring run-off and summer droughts. Much of the available water supply is polluted by industrial and agricultural run-off. We need to take control of our water supply and use it more wisely. We gratefully acknowledge the following agencies for their financial support of the 2010 Great Salmon Send-off:
and also the following groups for their efforts (past and present) toward protecting Stoney Creek - home of the Great Salmon Send-off:
