Stoney Creek

Stoney Creek is a small but viable salmon-bearing creek comprising over 4 km of watercourses along the main stem and four tributaries. Its upper reaches on Burnaby Mountain are fed by groundwater, rain and snow. The main stem has been channelized in places, forms a series of meanders in Stoney Creek Park, and then runs through an attractive ravine, eventually flowing into the Brunette River. Chum and coho salmon return to spawn every fall, and cutthroat and steelhead in winter and spring.

Stoney Creek is part of the Brunette watershed which also includes the following streams: Silver Creek, Eagle Creek, Beecher Creek, Still Creek, Massey Creek, Deer Creek and Beaver Creek. On Burnaby's south slope there is also Byrne Creek. Some of these have active streamkeeper groups. In addition, the Sapperton Fish and Game Club monitors conditions in the Brunette River and operates a breeding hatchery for salmonids.

Stoney Creek Environment Committee (S.C.E.C.)

The Stoney Creek Environment Committee is a citizen-driven volunteer group. We are committed to working in partnership with fellow citizens, corporations, and local, provincial and federal governments to protect and enhance Stoney Creek. We meet on the third Thursday of each month, at 7 p.m. in the Burnaby Environment Centre, 2730 Beaverbrook Crescent, Burnaby.

We need more volunteers, especially young ones. Some of our busiest members are getting on in years.

Our goals are:

  • To educate the public about their impact on urban streams.
  • To raise awareness of Stoney Creek through special events such as the Great Salmon Send-Off and BC Rivers Day.
  • To involve citizens of every age with enhancement projects along Stoney Creek.
  • To provide environmental education for school children in the Outdoor Classroom of Stoney Creek.
  • To promote stream stewardship with "eyes & ears" monitoring.
  • To promote co-operation among the many users of the Stoney Creek corridor. These include BC Hydro, Telus, GVRD, Rogers Cable, Terasen Pipelines, and local home owners.

Volunteer Opportunities

The Stoney Creek Environmental Committee provides opportunities to:

  • Help preserve a salmon-spawning creek and its watershed.
  • Get training to identify and record: fish, vegetation, birds, mammals, amphibians, and invertebrates.
  • Help with mapping the watershed, fish trapping and the annual spawner count.
  • Help set up a model stormwater, aquatic and wildlife management program.
  • Participate in restoration projects: reforesting and stabilising creek banks, establishing a tree farm, fish stocking.
  • Help raise public awareness by means of posters, brochures, newsletters, educational displays.
  • Help organise public events, such as the Great Salmon Send-off and B.C. Rivers Day.
