FOOD FIGHT HITS VANCOUVER APRIL 11

VANCOUVER - On April 11, the Society Promoting Environmental Conservation (SPEC) and The Eco-Café present FOOD FIGHT -- a major music, entertainment and fund raising event aimed at young people. The event takes place at The Rage in Vancouver. A week later, a major FTAA protest in Quebec City will continue the WTO revolt begun in Seattle. The FTAA protest will be a hot media event, and FOOD FIGHT will be a starting point for press coverage of the issue of democracy and globalization as it makes its way across Canada.

THE ISSUE

FOOD FIGHT is promoting greater awareness of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). Central to the issue is the fact that a number of prominent multinational food processing, chemical and pharmaceutical firms are producing genetically modified plants they claim will lower food production costs around the world. This is taking place without the full knowledge or consent of the public and without thorough research into the long term environmental and health impacts of genetic engineering. Evidence even suggests that research challenging the safety of GMOs is being suppressed by these same multinational organizations.

In Canada meanwhile, food and food products that contain genetically modified ingredients DO NOT require a label under Food and Drug regulations.

The public wants and deserves to be informed about what they are eating. A recent poll shows that about 70% of Vancouver residents want GMO free products.

DETAILS DETAILS

FOOD FIGHT will be a unique event geared to young people from all walks of life, many of whom cannot afford to buy organic foods and may be unaware of how serious the GMO issue really is. Organizers plan to cover the city with 1000 full sized posters and a minimum of 10,000 flyers. They plan a superb line-up of key bands. Well known environmentalists will give short, effective commentary, and there will be exciting attractions like professional skateboard demonstrations, fire-blowers, live graffiti artists, door prizes, etc.

This will be an important and fun event with huge potential to reach young people in a positive way. Sponsors will have their logo displayed in media coverage, on all promotional material, and will have promotional representation at the event. Event organizers are open to suggestions and welcome creative participation. We are expecting a sold out event of at least 1000 people. Ticket price will be only $15. Proceeds from the event go to promoting awareness of GMO foods.
