The GVRD's new Liquid Waste Management Plan will allow the continued discharge of up to 20 billion tons of raw sewage in to the region's marine environments. GVRD officials say the cost of upgrading the system to secondary and tertiary treatment prohibits the completion of major upgrades before 2050.

  • Compost food waste. Using your garburator means food waste decomposes in the sewer system, using up oxygen. This contributes to oxygen-depleted liquid effluent which kills marine life.

  • Use "earth-friendly" household cleaners.

  • Ask your dentist to safely dispose of mercury fillings. They are a major source of mercury contamination in the city's sewers.

  • Be prepared for taxes to pay for regional secondary treatment plants.
