Marine Habitat

  • Marine Habitat Protection: From its earliest days in the 1970s, SPEC has taken measures to prevent pollutants from entering BC's marine environment.
  • Oil-Free Coast: an Alliance of 70 organizations dedicated to protecting British Columbia's fragile marine ecology from the impacts of oil exploration.
  • Nanoose Bay: stopping US nuclear warships from dumping toxic materials into the Gulf of Georgia.
  • Chevron Oil Refinery: the North Burnaby refinery plans to dump MTBE contaminated waste water into Burrard Inlet.
  • Liquid Waste Management: The GVRD claims high costs prohibit the completion of major upgrades to the city's sewer treatment system before 2050. A recent poll suggests taxpayers are willing to support protection of our marine environments.

LAND

Materials Recycling

  • E-Waste (Electronic Product Recycling): Producer responsibility is the best solution for recycling electronic components, parts and materials.
  • Plastics: SPEC leads a nation-wide campaign for recycled content in plastic packaging

Pesticides

  • Pesticides: The door is now open to more municipal control over health and environmental issues as a result of a recent Supreme Court decision regarding a pesticide by-law in Hudson, Quebec. SPEC's campaign aims at banning non-essential pesticides in BC.
