Our Activities

SPEC actively promotes environmental responsibility through advocacy, education and protection.

SPEC operates the Vancouver Environmental Information Centre (VEIC), located at 2150 Maple Street in Vancouver. The Centre provides general environmental information, maintains an archive, and hosts venues for non-profit community groups.

To get involved, see our list of issues and volunteer opportunities below and contact us.

SPEC's History

SPEC was founded in 1969 in Coquitlam, BC by citizens concerned about the growing pollution problems. In 1981, SPEC partnered with the City of Vancouver, the Province of British Columbia and the Government of Canada in creating the Vancouver Energy Information Centre in Vancouver's Kitsilano neighbourhood. The building now includes the Vancouver Environmental Information Centre and the City of Vancouver Compost Demonstration Gardens managed by City Farmer.

SPEC is one of the oldest environmental organizations in Canada, and for over 30 years has brought a range of environmental concerns to the attention of policy makers, industry and the public. SPEC's education and research programs, press releases and are aimed at raising public awareness on environmental issues with the public, government and industry.
