Registering for an account with the Vancouver CommunityNet

You must register for a full account with us if you want to be able to send email, read Usenet news or view information on the World Wide Web. Guest users can only access local Web-based information and nothing else.

We offer these accounts to the public on the honour system. That means that we expect everyone with the means to take out an annual membership in our organization.

Please remember that we're a community-owned and operated system. It's the ongoing support of users like you that keeps us online!

Our office volunteers will activate your account once they have received your signed Reply Memo. Remember that we need the actual signed piece of paper. Email or faxes are not sufficient! Sorry.

Unfortunately we cannot notify you when your account has been activated. Expect a delay of a couple of weeks. Please do not call our office during this period.

The easiest way to find out if your account has been activated is to try and log in. If you can log in using the user ID and password you chose when you registered, then your account has been activated. Until then you can only log in as a guest.

Another way to find out if your account has been activated is to look at the Find User web form to search for your name. Let's say your name was, for example, Leslie Lee. First you would jump to the Find feature by press the "j" key and then typing "find". This takes you straight to the Find User form.

The cursor on the screen will be positioned at the start of an underlined section of the screen. Type in either your first or last name, say, lee, and then press <return> or <enter>. That moves the cursor off the input line and onto the Find button. Then press <return> or <enter> once more to start the search. Note that you can only search for one name at a time.

The computer will then go off and search the entire list of VCN users that match your name. This can take a moment or two if the system is busy. It will then display a list of all the users on the system who have either a first or last name which matches your search text.

If your name and user ID (Leslie Lee / llee in this example) show up, with a VAL beside it then your account has been activated. If it has nothing beside it then the account has not been validated. If it has been validated the you can log in using your user ID and password. The first thing you should do is change your password as soon as possible, because it is only temporary.

To do this type "j" and type "using". That will jump you to the Using the CommunityNet menu page, which contains the change password feature.
