Ongoing Projects

School Days of Port Moody

What is the "School Days of Port Moody Project?"
"The School Days of Port Moody" Project is a Virtual Museum of Canada, Community Memories Project which will develop further the already existing computer exhibit we have. It will expand on the information we have gathered relating the history and achievements of schools in Port Moody from 1884 to 1969. The exhibit will be "displayed" on a computer at the Museum and as well, will be hosted by VMC on the Internet Look here for more information coming up.

The Project is now up and available on the Virtual Museum of Canada. Follow this link to VMC. Then you may be offered a choice of language depending on whether you've been to VMC recently. Choose their "Community Memories" area. Choose "Flash" or "non-Flash" presentation from the lower left part of the page depending on if you have a fast connection or not. Go to the Explore part of the page and select Browse by Location Date or Topic. (or click here) Now you can choose "British Columbia." Look down the list for "School Days of Port Moody" and that will open up a window with the presentation in it. It is easier to do than it is to explain, honest. Otherwise you can cheat and if you have a fast connection click this fast link. If you have a slower telephone connection use this slower link.

Building and Grounds

The Large Exhibition Hall

One of the most visible projects at the museum - The Freight Shed Redevelopment Project which now houses the Museums’ Exhibition Room.

Beginning in the fall of 2006, great care was taken to insure the authenticity of the renovations. “We searched long and hard for reclaimed wood for the floors and display cases,” explains Manager/Curator Jim Millar. “This was an arduous task but necessary to keep with the ambience and look of our museum.”

It has a new name and it doesn't look like this any more! We have been calling it "The Freight Shed" but with the changes made to promote the display of artifacts and allow for lectures and showings we are changing the name to "The Large Exhibition Hall".

This picture was taken earlier in the year when renovations were under way. I have had a sneak peak or two and it looks wonderful with dark rich wood and honey light wood and new displays and cabinetry. The new setup will be more flexible and there will be more flexibility for creation of changing exhibits. The museum was good before but will be even better!

The Large Exhibition Hall was Opened on Father's day - June 17th 2007. It held our 2007 AGM quite nicely with Power Point presentations on the beautiful screen at the front of the room. The projection system can project content like Power Point Presentations from the museum computer network and it can even play DVDs from a carousel.

The recently renovated Freightshed (now called the Large Exhibit Room) is having new displays plus played a major part in our Honouring Veterans event on Canada Day. There is a new screen and sound system tanks to the Port Moody Foundation. The Vancouver Foundation was the biggest supporter and the BC Arts Council also helped significantly. Lots of volunteer help with the biggest thanks to Dave Maxwell.

Furnaces

The museum had two heat pumps installed which provide climate control in the museum in order to aid in the preservation of the artifacts housed within it. The heat pumps in our climate will rarely need the small high efficiency furnace incorporated into the system. The system means that the museum is not reliant on using much gas for heating at all. The chimneys also are no longer used for the heating system and are now decorative. The system also works to maintain a constant humidity level selected for the best preservation of the artifacts.

Drainage

The drainage around the museum was replaced and improved necessitating temporary removal of the station platform and various other inconveniances around the museum. The changes were necesary to prevent flooding which has periodically been a problem in the museum basement.

Venosta Windows

The windows in our 1920's CPR Passenger Car, The Venosta, have been redone. While mostly using the glass existing in the frames the frames themselves have been refurbished Hardware that had been incorrectly installed in the frames has been reinstalled more correctly. Now some of the windows will even be open able which will solve some of the summer heat problems in the car.

What's Been Happening Around the Museum

At the end of the Summer (2009) Platform replacement and repairs were completed and the station got a facelift with a fresh coat of paint. Our passenger rail car, the Venosta also had a fresh coat of paint to go along with well needed roof repairs.

At the end of Fall (2009) the Venosta’s lettering was redone and the waiting room painted. The floor is planned to be done soon if not already. (Winter 2009-2010)
