David: "All the guys contributed vocals at various times.Stooed (pronounced "Stewed") performed original material and on numerous occassions shared the bill with Blackfoot. The band was formed in 1971 and played together until 1974. However, most importantly, they have remained best of friends all of these years. Stooed still get together to record originals and all of it's members both play and compose. Like the Grape, Stooed was the victim of a bad name.

Location: San Francisco, USA

Date of recording: Basic recording done May 13, 2000. Finished about a week later. We mixed it June 4th.

Recorded on 16 track ADAT at World For Ransom's home studio. Billie's guitar developed an outrageous hum during a last minute overdub, due to a grounding problem. So she played the finger-picking part sitting on the floor with her bare foot touching the cover plate on her guitar. It was acrobatic.

Since it is a short song, we were able to finish it relatively on time. Thanks to the Grape for those short but perfect tunes.

Billie chose Queen Of The Crow because she couldn't stop singing it for awhile after she heard it. What's odd about the lyrics is that as a Bob Mosley tune it seems to come from some totally diferent space than a lot of the Grape's tunes, and a lot of Bob's tunes. It makes you womder where music comes from in general, and how these things become important enough that they filter through our conciousness and public space.

It also hints at what a wide-range this band covered lyrically and musically. The version Bob recorded is a bit stoical and understated - it's a pretty dark lyric. And the harmonies are hard to beat.

Being ex-Goths, we fell for that whole spooky thing and recorded Queen Of The Crow with that in mind. But we want to hear Moby Grape's version, in concert. Soon.
