Inland Refugee Society of B.C.
Committed to Refugee Protection

Working in partnership to prevent homelessness and hunger, and support refugees' social and economic integration in British Columbia

Inland Refugee Society of B.C.
has addressed poverty, hunger, and homelessness amongst refugee-claimant newcomers since 1984.

Inland Refugee Society's
key services include: referral to emergency shelter, transitional housing, and affordable rental accommodation; a weekly foodbank, which includes milk for infants; a clothing-bank; some household goods and furniture by donation; referral and orientation; and photographs for refugee application forms.

Inland Refugee Society
also contributes to ameliorating refugee-claimant poverty by giving claimants an introduction to the Canadian labour market through its on-site volunteer program, which orients newcomers to employment expectations, increases their confidence, and contributes to their "Canadian work experience." The organization also provides free evening English classes at various levels to refugee claimants.

Inland Refugee Society (IRS) is a non-profit , non-governmental agency dedicated specifically to assisting families and individuals seeking refugee protection in Canada.

Inland Refugee Society of B.C. serves nearly 50% of all refugee-claimant newcomers in the province. On behalf of the 600 individuals IRS helps each year, IRS would like to thank the following funding partners for their support of our programs and services: the B.C. Government; City of Vancouver; Vancity; and Mazon.

Inland Refugee Society is a member of the Canadian Council for Refugees (CCR), the Affiliation of Multicultural Societies and Services (AMSSA), and the Vancouver Refugee Services Alliance (VRSA). IRS-BC co-chairs the Housing Working Group of the Red Cross' "First Contact" program, and is a member of the CCR's National Housing Group.
