Childminder

Purpose:  To ensure the safety and well-being of children at the Centre.

Requirements/ Qualifications:

  • Police Record Check
  • Well organized and detail oriented
  • Calm and unflustered in busy environment
  • Experience in the care of children an asset
  • Willingness to learn
  • Patient and open attitude
  • Must like children

Activities:

  • Preparation of snacks
  • Preparation of craft activities
  • Assistance with room maintenance i.e. clean-up, cupboards and shelves

Limits of Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Volunteer refers questions pertaining to role of the Centre or any questions of a sensitive nature to her/his supervisor
  • Volunteers provide information of a general nature such as courses offered, times of operation etc. but refer questions pertaining to specific policies and purpose to their supervisor.

Staff Partner:

  • The Childminder Volunteer will be under the supervision of the Child Development Coordinator
  • The staff partner will provide guidance and support for the volunteer
  • All volunteers are important members of the team.

Orientation and Training:

  • Volunteers receive a standard orientation to the Centre and specific orientation and training as needed to perform their tasks.
  • Volunteers are given feedback on a regular basis.
  • Training and development to enhance the volunteers’ knowledge and skills are provided where possible.

 Time Commitment:

  • 2 to 3 hours, 3 times a week

Toy Washer

Purpose:  To ensure the health and well-being of children at the Centre by cleaning the toys & play equipment.

Requirements/ Qualifications:

  • Police Record Check
  • Comfortable working with water & cleaning agents
  • Willing to learn

Activities:

  • Choose from list of equipment to be washed
  • Gather toys/equipment to be washed
  • Pour water, soap & bleach into container
  • Carry washing tub into child minding room
  • Carry toys to washing area
  • Wash & dry toys
  • Empty washing tub
  • Return toys to designated areas

 Limits of Volunteer Responsibilities:

Special Events Planning Volunteer

Purpose:  To assist with development of special events

Requirements/ Qualifications:

  • Police Record Check
  • Well organized and detail oriented
  • Calm and unflustered in busy environment
  • Knowledge of community
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills both in person and by telephone
  • Ability to take responsibility and pride in the job to be done
  • Some knowledge of mental health an asset

Activities:

  • Delivery of brochures within the community
  • Work with planning committee to develop and organize special events
  • Hand out information at events
  • Prepare displays at school fairs
  • Plan and implement promotion for events

 Limits of Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Volunteer refers questions pertaining to role of the Centre or any questions of a sensitive nature to her/his supervisor
  • Volunteers provide information of a general nature such as courses offered, times of operation etc. but refer questions pertaining to specific policies and purpose to their supervisor.

 Staff Partner:

  • The Special Events Planning Volunteer will be under the supervision of the Office Manager
  • The staff partner will provide guidance and support for the volunteer
  • All volunteers are important members of the team.

 Orientation and Training:

  • Volunteers receive a standard orientation to the Centre and specific orientation and training as needed to perform their tasks.

  • Volunteers are given feedback on a regular basis

  • Training and development to enhance the volunteers’ knowledge and skills are provided where possible.

 Time Commitment:

  • To be determined for each event
  • Busy time likely to be October/September and in the Spring

Special Events Volunteer

Purpose:  To assist with special events

 Requirements/ Qualifications:

  • Police Record Check
  • Well organized and detail oriented
  • Calm and unflustered in busy environment
  • Knowledge of community
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills both in person and by telephone
  • Some knowledge of mental health an asset

Activities:

  • Delivery of flyers prior to events
  • Assist with set up and clean up at events site
  • Hand out information at events

Limits of Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Volunteer refers questions pertaining to role of the Centre or any questions of a sensitive nature to her/his supervisor
  • Volunteers provide information of a general nature such as courses offered, times of operation etc. but refer questions pertaining to specific policies and purpose to their supervisor.

  • The Special Events Volunteer will be under the supervision of the Adult Mental Health Resource Centre Coordinator
  • The staff partner will provide guidance and support for the volunteer
  • All volunteers are important members of the team.

Orientation and Training:

  • Volunteers receive a standard orientation to the Centre and specific orientation and training as needed to perform their tasks.
  • Volunteers are given feedback on a regular basis
  • Training and development to enhance the volunteers’ knowledge and skills are provided where possible.

Time Commitment:

  • To be determined for each event

Interpreter

Purpose:  To assist clients by providing verbal interpretation in the community as requested

Requirements/ Qualifications:

  • Fluency in English and another language
  • Police Record Check
  • Ability to listen carefully and interpret accurately
  • Willingness to improve skills and knowledge
  • Interest in helping others
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Patient and open attitude
  • Ability to work within the policies and guidelines of the Centre

Responsibilities:

  • Accompany client or be available to provide interpretation service in schools or business in the community, as assigned by the Centre
  • Report back to Immigrant Settlement Coordinator following assignment
  • Upgrade interpretation skills as required

Related Activities:

  • Complete paperwork as required
  • Attend relevant meetings or information sessions at the Centre, as required

Limits of Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Act solely as an interpreter, not providing advice to client, school or business
  • Not drive client to destinations in the community unless pre-approved by the Immigrant Settlement Coordinator
  • Not handle financial or legal concerns of client

Staff Partner:

  • The Interpreter will be under the supervision of the  Immigrant Settlement Coordinator
  • The staff partner will provide guidance and support for the volunteer
  • All volunteers are important members of the team.

Orientation and Training:

  • Volunteers receive a standard orientation to the Centre and specific orientation and training as needed to perform their tasks.
  • Volunteers are given feedback on a regular basis
  • Training and development to enhance the volunteers’ knowledge and skills are provided where possible.

Library Assistant

 

Purpose:  To assist with the maintenance of the Family Education and Support Centre library

 

Requirements/ Qualifications:

  • Calm and unflustered in busy environment
  • Knowledge of library operation
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills both in person and by telephone
  • Ability to take responsibility and pride in the job to be done
  • Some knowledge of mental health an asset

 

Activities:

  • Set up and maintenance of library records
  • Update of systems as required

 

Limits of Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Volunteer refers questions pertaining to role of the Centre or any questions of a sensitive nature to her/his supervisor
  • Volunteers provide information of a general nature such as courses offered, times of operation etc. but refer questions pertaining to specific policies and purpose to their supervisor.

Office Assistant – Immigrant Settlement

Purpose:  To assist Immigrant Settlement Coordinator with administration duties.

Requirements/ Qualifications:

  • Office experience an asset
  • Police Record Check
  • Ability to listen carefully and follow instructions
  • Well organized
  • Willingness to improve skills and knowledge
  • Some computer experience an asset
  • Reliable and committed
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Patient and open attitude
  • Ability to work within the policies and guidelines of the Centre

Responsibilities:

  • Data entry
  • Maintenance of resources
  • Filing
  • Upgrade computer skills as required

Related Activities:

  • Maintain strict confidentiality
  • Occasional phone work

Limits of Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Office Assistant volunteer will not give advice or counsel clients

Staff Partner:

  • The Office Assistant will be under the supervision of the Immigrant Settlement Coordinator
  • The staff partner will provide guidance and support for the volunteer
  • All volunteers are important members of the team.

Orientation and Training:

  • Volunteers receive a standard orientation to the Centre and specific orientation and training as needed to perform their tasks.
  • Volunteers are given feedback on a regular basis
  • Training and development to enhance the volunteers’ knowledge and skills are provided where possible.

Time Commitment:

  • 2 to 4 hours per week

Office Support Volunteer

Purpose:  To provide practical office support

Requirements/ Qualifications:

  • Police Record Check
  • Well organized and detail oriented
  • Calm and unflustered in busy environment
  • Understanding of office procedures
  • Knowledge of office equipment i.e. photocopier
  • Excellent interpersonal skills both in person and by telephone
  • Computer literacy in Excel and Word
  • Some knowledge of mental health an asset

Activities:

  • Ability to accurately record and deliver telephone messages
  • Ability to assist with mailings
  • Photocopying, as needed
  • Office clerical duties

Limits of Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Volunteer refers questions pertaining to role of the Centre or any questions of a sensitive nature to her/his supervisor
  • Volunteers provide information of a general nature such as courses offered, times of operation etc. but refer questions pertaining to specific policies and purpose to their supervisor.

Advisory Committee Volunteer

Purpose:  To become an active member of the Advisory Committee

Requirements/ Qualifications:

  • Police Record Check
  • Well organized and detail oriented
  • Interest in promoting the mission and purpose of the Family Education and Support Centre
  • Excellent interpersonal skills both in person and by telephone
  • Interest in promoting youth participation in the community and in meeting the needs of  youth in the community 
  • Experience serving on a Board an asset
  • Willingness to expand knowledge/expertise

Activities:

  • Attend all committee meetings
  • Actively participate in the work of the committee
  • Accept committee assignments as required

 Limits of Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Volunteer refers questions pertaining to role of the Centre or any questions of a sensitive nature to her/his supervisor
  • Volunteers provide information of a general nature such as courses offered, times of operation etc. but refer questions pertaining to specific policies and purpose to their supervisor.

 Staff Partner:

  • The Advisory Committee Volunteer will be under the supervision of the  Coordinator of Families
  • The staff partner will provide guidance and support for the volunteer
  • All volunteers are important members of the team.

Orientation and Training:

  • Volunteers receive a standard orientation to the Centre and specific orientation and training as needed to perform their tasks.
  • Volunteers are given feedback on a regular basis
  • Training and development to enhance the volunteers’ knowledge and skills are provided where possible.

Time Commitment:

  • Monthly meetings over a 2 year period
  • Committee assignments as required
