Outreach Library Services

"To serve as a bridge to link the non-English literate senior citizens with the outside world..."

Funded by the City of Vancouver, the Outreach Library Services Project is a unique service for the Vancouver Chinese community. Its purpose is to serve as a bridge to link the non-English literate senior citizens and homebound people in Vancouver East with the outside world as well as to ensure that their needs and concerns are being looked after.

The Outreach Library Services worker and volunteers visit fourteen local senior housing projects and extended care facilities every week. They bring books and magazines to the seniors and homebound people as well as help them read and write letters; fill in forms; declare income tax; provide translation, counsellingand referral services; organize educational and recreational activities; and update them with information on community resources and news that impact on their lives. The Outreach Library Services worker also works closely with other community professionals to develop programs and services to address the needs of his clients.
