Introduction

The Chinese Community Library Services Association (hereafter called Chinese Community Library) is the information centre for the Chinese Canadian community. Its goals are to meet the reading and information needs of Chinese readers, preserve records on Chinese Canadian history, support learning and research, as well as promote Chinese language and culture to enhance inter-cultural understanding and racial harmony.

The Chinese Community Library was established in 1972. It started as  "Chinese Reading Room" for the Strathcona neighbourhood. Over the years, it has grown to become a library for the community. The Chinese Community Library has one of the largest Chinese library collections in British Columbia. The collection consists of books,

newspapers, magazines, music cassettes, spoken work cassettes and videos. In addition, there are special collections on Chinese Canadian history and Chinese langauge learning. Most of the books and audio-visual materials are donations from friends and supporters.

The Chinese Community Library is a volunteer based, charitable society. Volunteers are its strength. They complement and support the work of the 1 full-time and 2 part-time staff to ensure the smooth running of the whole organization. The work they are involved in range from providing circulation services and processing books to organizing programs and developing resources.

We welcome your visit to the Chinese Community Library!

The main sources of operation revenue come from fund-raising, donations and membership fees. Some government grants have helped to start projects.

Ancient books in China were bound together by thread, hence the name stitch bound books.
