Introduction

The Chinese Community Library Services Association (hereafter called Chinese Community Library) is the information centre for the Chinese Canadian community. Its goals are to meet the reading and information needs of Chinese readers, preserve records on Chinese Canadian history, support learning and research, as well as promote Chinese language and culture to enhance inter-cultural understanding and racial harmony.

Collections: Our collection comprises over 40,000 Chinese books. It contains fictions and non-fiction materials covering a wide range of topics and subjects. We collect local Chinese  newspapers and Chinese  periodicals from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Vancouver. We also collect the  audio and visual materials, including audiocassettes, videos and laser discs.

Chinese Community History Room:  The Chinese Community Library established the Chinese Community History Room in 1983. We have collected a significant amount of documents on various topics. Now our collections cover different types, such as Chinese news clippings, Manuscripts, Recorded Sound, Old Photographs, journals, biographies and various publications.

The Chinese Newspaper Clippings DatabaseThe Database is a systematical article search engine and has processed over 30,000 newspaper  articles, regarding to news about Chinese residents and Chinese community activities since 1995, from the three local newspapers, Ding Tao Daily, Ming Pao and World Journal.

Services

As a member of Chinese Community Library, you can enjoy many library services and participate in our activities.

  • Literature Loan: Valid members can borrow books, magazines, audio and visual materials. Members can borrow 8 items of different material per visit for 3 weeks. Members are divided into different membership categories: children (under 13 years old), adults, and lifetime members.

  • Outreach Program: We also provide mobile outreach service in which our workers visit Chinese Canadian seniors living in the housing projects and extended care facilities. In order to satisfy their reading and informational needs, we bring books, fill in forms, translate English materials, write letters, and so on.

Activities

The Chinese Community Library takes pride in its numerous activities  for its members and the public. Every year, we offer wide varieties of programs which aim at promoting Chinese culture and raising public interest in reading Chinese books. The Children's Chinese Storytelling Competition held in April and The Children Chinese Essay Writing Competition in November have become our annual great events.

Volunteer

As a non-profit organization, The Chinese Community Library needs assistance and support from volunteers in every aspect, from staffing the service desk and processing library materials to organizing activities and fun-raising events. Volunteers are the strength of the library. We hope to see you being our volunteer and serving our Chinese community。
