NEWS and RESEARCH

Dr. Charlotte Johnston’s UBC Parenting Lab
Psychology Department, University of British Columbia http://www.psych.ubc.ca/~cjlab/

We are currently conducting research with adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Specifically, we are looking at how mothers’ thoughts about themselves in a number of major areas of functioning (work competence, household management, intelligence, sociability, intimate relationships, nurturance, and parenting) differ from other people’s thoughts about them, and whether the discrepancies between self- versus other-reports are greater in mothers who have ADHD.

We are currently recruiting mothers with ADHD and mothers without ADHD between now until December 2010. Our research is open to mothers of 3 to 16 year old children, who would be willing to undergo a phone screening, and complete questionnaires online regarding their life functioning. The entire study is estimated to take about 45 minutes. Mothers will also designate another informant who is close to them (e.g., a relative or friend) to answer 20 minutes worth of online questionnaires regarding the mothers’ behaviour and their own general characteristics. Mothers will receive a $15 honorarium for participation.

Parent and Child Attributions and Disruptive Child Behaviour Study

We are inviting mothers and their 8-11 year old sons who have ADHD to participate in a study looking at how parents’ and children’s thoughts about each other are related to how they get along. In particular, we are interested in the links between mothers’, fathers’ and children’s explanations for each other’s behavior and how these explanations are related to parenting and child problems.  We will be comparing these effects between parents whose sons have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and parents whose sons do not have difficulties with their behavior.  Mothers and their sons will come to UBC for about 2 ½ hours and take part in activities, such as doing tasks together, playing together, answering questions about each others’ behaviours and completing questionnaires. Families can receive up to $50 for their participation, and sons will get a UBC t-shirt and small prizes. If you are interested in participating with us or would like more information on our study, please contact us at (604) 822-9037.
