Festival Closing Party
URBAN BARN DANCE with AFRO SHILLELAGH

Sunday Oct 17, 7pm - 10pm
Ukrainian Hall, 805 East Pender

Grab your friends, neighbours and the whole fam-damily and head on down to the festival closing party to join in this toe tappin' dance with DTES resident Russell Shumsky and his Afro Shillelagh cohorts. Think of line dancing without cowboy hats and square dancing without petticoats. Just follow the dance caller's directions and we'll all be experts in minutes. And what an ending to the festival it will be. Afro-Shillelagh takes old-time fiddle tunes, beats in West African percussion and stirs with a Celtic stick. Add a pinch of music from Brittany, Sweden and Quebec and we have a great final stew for the DTES Heart of the City Festival. Pay as you can.

THROUGH THE PEOPLES’ VOICE
New works by Patrick Foley,
Leith Harris & Dora Sanders

In association with Vancouver Moving Theatre
Saturday Oct 16, 8pm & Sunday Oct 17, 2pm
Ukrainian Hall, 805 East Pender
This year’s People’s Voice brings together Downtown Eastside-involved writers, actors and musicians in three one-act staged readings with live music that explore some of the "ins and outs" of everyday life in the Downtown Eastside. The results of these collaborations are accessible, lively, gritty and heartfelt, with lots of musical surprises and old fashioned sound effects. Veteran director James Fagan Tait and hot young composer Joelysa Pankanea join Artistic Director Savannah Walling and some of our favourite community artists for an inner city evening of down-home comedy . . . satire . . . music . . . and song. Pay as you can.
